Life Threatening Allergies 8 Times More Common in 13 Yearsby Heidi Stevenson7 February 2010
The Observer reports receiving National Health Service (NHS) statistics documenting an eight-fold increase in severe and fatal adult-onset allergies over just the last 13 years. Reactions are to common and normally harmless substances and foods, including eggs, nuts, fish, dairy products, fruit and vegetables, latex, insect stings, and drugs. (Well...the drugs aren't so harmless.) Obviously, something has happened in the last couple of decades to create this health threat. Severe allergies are not defined as hay fever or simple rashes, but as having the potential of causing anaphylactic shock, a deadly reaction that can cause swelling in the breathing passages or sudden drop in blood pressure resulting in death, or a wide array of other symptoms. The increase in severe allergies is a significant public health threat, both in terms of lives affected and healthcare costs to manage them. An allergy is an inappropriate response of the immune system to a substance that should be seen as harmless. In people with allergies, the immune system has become overactive. Something in modern life—something new or worsening over the last couple of decades—is causing the increase. Potential Causes of Allergy IncreaseVaccinationsTina Dixon is an allergy consultant with the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital. She states: Older adults coming to my clinic suffering latesensitization to fruit and vegetables were a rarity in the 1980s. But, it makes no sense to suggest that there are more people today experiencing abnormal ingestion of eggs, other than by way of vaccinations. Many vaccines utilize eggs to grow antibodies for injection. Even the best processing cannot remove every last bit of the eggs, and warnings that people with egg allergies should avoid many vaccines are routine. What is a vaccination, if not the unnatural absorption of a substance? Gaia Health has discussed this concern in several articles, including Squalene—Is New Vaccine Additive the Worst Yet? and Vaccine Adjuvants: The Stealth Health Threat. Some autoimmune diseases are caused by the unnatural absorption of a substance. Lab mice are injected with collagen to give them the equivalent of rheumatoid arthritis. Workers in abattoirs who breathe aerosolized pig brains are known to develop a severe autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack nerve cells. Such things seem to be happening more and more. Each of these is a result of the body's immune system going awry—just as it is with allergies. Excessive Medical TreatmentsThe helpline manager at Anaphylaxis Campaign, Moira Austin, says that she's noted an increase in women seeking help for allergies. In particular, she says: It tends to be women who become allergic around the time of the menopause or after a stay in hospital. It comes on suddenly and involves foods they have eaten happily for their entire life. On reaching menopause, women are routinely medicalized. Instead of treating menopause as a normal experience, it's treated as a disease. Women are given drugs for a condition they don't have, osteoporosis. They're drugged under the presumption that their circulatory health has become abnormal. So, they're ingesting substances that aren't normally found in the body, or are in abnormal proportions. Women who are hospitalized routinely receive injections, a wholly unnatural way for a substance to be introduced to the body. While it may make sense to take such risks under some circumstances, these extreme medical treatments have become the norm. The cost to each person suffering from severe allergies is incalculable. The impact on health and ability to take pleasure in normal things is impaired. Society as a whole pays an enormous financial cost. 11% of the NHS drug budget is spent on allergy medications, and this doesn't count the cost of GP visits for allergies. About 30,000 people were admitted to hospital for severe allergic reactions last year alone. The cost in use of hospital beds and medical facilities is immense. There's little to motivate the medical system itself to look into the real causes of this new epidemic. Doctors keep themselves in jobs by not seeing potential causes within their system. Big Pharma rakes in huge sums for treating allergies, not to mention the money they make in drugs and vaccines that may be causing them. The allergy epidemic itself is merely a symptom of a health system gone mad. |
