Animals Tortured and Killed to Redefine Foods as DrugsMoney pouring into medical research to find medical uses for ordinary foods results in the torture and killing of thousands of experimental animals.by Heidi Stevenson4 August 2011
In reviewing literature on the health effects of foods, supplements and herbs, I found myself growing more and more uncomfortable. Studies are now being done on animals to see if natural products have beneficial effects in trauma. To do this, of course, it's necessary to first traumatize the animals. A prime example is a new study on the effects of Coenzyme Q10 in severely injured rat brains.(1) To do this, they had to severly traumatize and kill a bunch of rats. They give a clear explanation of how it was done. First, the rats were anesthetized and incisions were made into their brains. Then, they dropped a lead object directly onto the open brains. Of course, they had a system that assured each rat's brain would be injured in the same way. Though not directly stated, it can be inferred by the fact that the rats were anesthetized 48 hours later that they woke up to live with the harm and pain of their injured brains. The brain trauma induced was so great that 4 of the original 25 rats died of it. So, they added 4 more rats to the study and mutilated them. They then further traumatized the rats by force-feeding them. One group was force-fed a saline solution immediately after the brain injuries and 24 hours later. Another group was force-fed Coenzyme Q10 at the rate of 10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight 24 hours after the trauma. That is equivalent to an average human being eating nearly seven-tenths of a kilogram (1½ pounds) of CoQ10 at one sitting! Forty-eight hours after traumatizing the poor rats, they killed them, excised their brains, and took a look. What they learned was that massive doses of Coenzyme Q10 can alleviate some brain damage. Now, they want to do long term studies. They want to kill more rats and torture them for longer so they can see if massive doses of a nutrient can alleviate traumatic brain damage. Purpose of This Animal TortureThis is just one study of many that use animals in horrifically cruel ways to see if elements of foods have health benefits. As we know, most research in the medical field is corrupted by Big Pharma money. As we also know, Big Pharma is not interested in doing research that won't increase their profits. We are living in a time when foods are being redefined as drugs—and then regulated as drugs. There are two beneficiaries: Big Pharma and Big Medicine. The people's right to direct access to foods and their derivatives—a right that has existed throughout history and so basic no one could have imagined it would need to be itemized along with free speech—is being stolen. In anticipation, Big Pharma is now pouring money into studies to find physiological effects of foods and supplements. In the process, they kill, mutilate, and torture animals—all at the altar of profits. The march to redefine foods, vitamins, and herbs as drugs will stop at nothing. Animals are tortured and killed to test whether natural substances have value in medical situations. If you haven't signed one of the petitions to stop the redefinition of foods as drugs, please do: Please sign. You'll not only be helping to restore access to foods, supplements, and herbs, you'll also be helping prevent the utterly pointless torturing of animals.
