The Mind
The term mental health immediately takes us into an image of mind sanitation—the idea that emotional misery means that there is something wrong with the person and that the should be wiped clean of it. Gaia Health rejects that view. The mind is a precious and nebulous thing. It is far more than chemical synapses in the brain. Mental health is a construction of society, not an easily-defined reality. Psychiatry and psychology generally exist to impose the status quo. The definition of mental illness seems to be thinking, behaving, or feeling outside society's current norms. Gaia Health examines these concepts and their implications, how mainstream medicine has coopted them, and how they are treated by mainstream medicine.
